Polar cap absorption events
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008014
An anomalous increase in radio wave absorption in the ionosphere over the Earth's polar regions, caused by the precipitation of high-energy protons and electrons from space. These events are typically triggered by solar flares or coronal mass ejections, which direct energetic particles towards the poles along geomagnetic field lines. This absorption can disrupt high-frequency radio communication and satellite navigation systems in the affected areas.
