Proton precipitation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008186

The influx of high-energy protons from the magnetosphere into the Earth's upper atmosphere, primarily in the polar regions. This phenomenon occurs when protons trapped in the magnetosphere are accelerated and guided along magnetic field lines, colliding with atmospheric gases. Proton precipitation contributes to the ionization of the ionosphere and can cause auroral displays.
