Atmospheric ionization
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003674
The process by which atoms or molecules in the atmosphere gain or lose electrons, resulting in the formation of ions. This occurs primarily through interaction with high-energy radiation, such as cosmic rays and solar ultraviolet radiation, or through collisions with energetic particles. It is particularly prevalent in the upper atmosphere, forming the ionosphere.
