Cosmic rays
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004724
High-energy particles, primarily protons and atomic nuclei, that originate from sources outside our solar system, such as supernovae. These particles travel across space at speeds approaching that of light. When they collide with molecules in Earth's atmosphere, they generate a shower of secondary particles that can be detected at the surface.
