Cosmic-ray ionization

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004725

The process by which high-energy particles originating from outer space, known as cosmic rays, collide with atmospheric gas molecules, stripping electrons from them and creating ions. This ionization occurs throughout the atmosphere but is most pronounced in the upper layers, contributing to the electrical conductivity of the air. It is a natural source of atmospheric ions, which can influence cloud formation and atmospheric electricity.
