Vortex stretching
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010066
The process by which a vortex tube or filament becomes elongated, leading to an increase in its rotational velocity and a corresponding intensification of vorticity. This phenomenon occurs when fluid parcels within the vortex are stretched along the axis of rotation. Vortex stretching is a key mechanism in the formation and intensification of tornadoes and other strong atmospheric circulations.
