Vertical stretching
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010000
A process in fluid dynamics where a column of fluid is elongated in the vertical direction, leading to a corresponding decrease in its horizontal dimensions to conserve volume. In the atmosphere, vertical stretching of an air parcel can occur due to convergence of air at lower levels or divergence at upper levels. This process is associated with an increase in relative vorticity, contributing to the intensification of cyclonic systems.
