Deformation axis

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004900

The principal axes along which a fluid parcel experiences maximum stretching and shrinking due to atmospheric flow. These axes are perpendicular to each other and define the orientation of the deformation field. The rate of stretching or shrinking along these axes indicates the intensity of the deformation.
