Axis of contraction
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003754
A line or direction along which a fluid parcel or air mass is undergoing convergence and reduction in its spatial extent. This process often leads to an increase in velocity or intensity in other directions due to conservation principles. It is a concept used in fluid dynamics to describe deformation.
