Deformation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004899

The change in shape or size of a fluid parcel over time due to variations in the velocity field. It encompasses stretching, shearing, and rotation, which alter the configuration of atmospheric features. In meteorology, deformation fields are often associated with fronts, jet streams, and other regions of strong atmospheric gradients.
