Strain tensor
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009290
A mathematical object that describes the deformation of a fluid parcel or continuous medium at a given point. In fluid dynamics, it quantifies how the shape and volume of a small element of air change due to the velocity field, including stretching, shearing, and changes in volume. The strain tensor is symmetric and is used in the Navier-Stokes equations to relate the deformation rate to the viscous stresses within the fluid.
