Cartesian tensor
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004185
A mathematical object that describes physical quantities whose components transform in a specific way under rotations of the Cartesian coordinate system. In atmospheric science, tensors are used to represent quantities like stress, strain, and anisotropic diffusion, which have direction-dependent properties. For example, the stress tensor describes forces acting on fluid elements in the atmosphere.
