Tensor
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009549
A mathematical object that generalizes scalars, vectors, and matrices, used to describe physical quantities that depend on direction and orientation in space. In meteorology, tensors are applied to represent complex atmospheric properties like stress, strain, and anisotropic diffusion. A stress tensor, for example, describes forces acting on a fluid element.
