Vertical vorticity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010003
The component of the vorticity vector that is perpendicular to the Earth's surface, representing the local rotation of air about a vertical axis. Positive vertical vorticity indicates cyclonic rotation (counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere), while negative indicates anticyclonic rotation. It is a key parameter in understanding the development and intensification of cyclones and thunderstorms.
