Vertical wind shear

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002977

  1. The change in horizontal wind speed or direction with increasing altitude in the atmosphere. This phenomenon is a measure of how much the wind varies across different atmospheric layers. Strong vertical wind shear can inhibit the development of thunderstorms by tearing apart their updrafts, but it can also contribute to the organization and intensification of severe storms under certain conditions.

  2. the change in the wind's direction and speed with height. This is a critical factor in determining whether severe thunderstorms will develop.
