Aircraft weather reconnaissance

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003402

The use of specially equipped aircraft to fly into or near weather systems to gather detailed atmospheric data. These missions are frequently conducted for tropical cyclones, such as hurricanes and typhoons, to measure central pressure, maximum wind speeds, and storm structure. Data are collected by onboard instruments and from deployable sensors called dropsondes, which measure atmospheric profiles as they fall through the storm.
