Aircraft-to-satellite data relay

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003403

A communication system that automatically transmits meteorological and flight data from an aircraft to a ground station via a geostationary or polar-orbiting satellite. This process, known as ASDAR, collects information on air temperature, wind speed and direction, pressure, and turbulence from commercial aircraft during flight. The data are then distributed globally over the Global Telecommunication System for use in weather forecasting and atmospheric research.
