Airplane observation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003416

The collection of atmospheric data by instruments mounted on an aircraft. These observations provide high-resolution in-situ measurements of temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, turbulence, and atmospheric composition at different altitudes along a flight path. Data from commercial aircraft is automatically transmitted through programs like the Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR), supplementing traditional weather balloon soundings for use in numerical weather prediction models.
