Dropsonde

A specialized atmospheric sounding instrument deployed from an aircraft to measure vertical profiles of meteorological parameters as it descends through the atmosphere. It transmits data on temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind speed and direction back to the aircraft. Dropsondes are frequently used in hurricane reconnaissance to gather data within tropical cyclones.
