Meteorological reconnaissance flight
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007247
A specialized aircraft mission flown into weather systems, particularly tropical cyclones, to collect detailed atmospheric data that cannot be obtained by remote sensing or ground-based observations. These flights deploy dropsondes and measure parameters like pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind speed directly within the storm. The United States Air Force's 'Hurricane Hunters' conduct these missions.
