Accelerometer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003212

An instrument designed to measure proper acceleration, which is the acceleration experienced by an object relative to a free-falling frame of reference. In atmospheric science, accelerometers are used in weather balloons, aircraft, and rockets to determine forces acting on the platform and to derive wind shear or turbulence characteristics. These devices typically measure acceleration in meters per second squared (m/s²).
