Diffusion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005008
The net movement of molecules or particles down a concentration gradient, from an area of higher concentration to one of lower concentration. This process results from the random thermal motion of particles and continues until the concentration is uniform throughout the system. In the atmosphere, diffusion is responsible for the mixing of gases and the dispersion of pollutants, a process described by Fick's laws of diffusion.
