Down-gradient diffusion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005113
The net movement of a substance from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, driven by the concentration gradient. This process is a fundamental mechanism for the transport of heat, moisture, and chemical constituents in the atmosphere. It represents a dissipative process that tends to smooth out spatial variations in atmospheric properties, contributing to mixing within the boundary layer.
