Down-gradient transport
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005114
The movement of a scalar quantity, such as heat, moisture, or a pollutant, from an area of higher concentration or intensity to an area of lower concentration or intensity. This transport is driven by the gradient of the scalar field, acting to reduce spatial differences. It is a fundamental process in atmospheric dynamics, contributing to the mixing and redistribution of properties within the atmosphere, often described by Fick's law for diffusion.
