Electric field
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005305
A region of space around an electrically charged particle or object where another charged particle would experience a force. It is a vector field, meaning it has both magnitude and direction at every point. In the atmosphere, electric fields are generated by charge separation in thunderstorms and are responsible for driving the movement of ions and initiating lightning discharges.
