Space charge

An accumulation of electric charge within a volume of space, rather than on a surface. In the atmosphere, space charge can arise from the presence of ions and charged aerosols, particularly near the ground or within thunderclouds. It contributes to the overall atmospheric electric field and can influence lightning initiation.
