Photoelectron

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007912

An electron emitted from an atom or molecule as a result of absorbing a photon, a process known as the photoelectric effect. This phenomenon occurs when the energy of the incident photon exceeds the binding energy of the electron, causing it to be ejected. In the upper atmosphere, photoelectrons are produced when solar ultraviolet radiation ionizes atmospheric gases, contributing to the ionosphere's electrical properties.
