A quantum of electromagnetic radiation, representing the smallest discrete unit of light or other forms of electromagnetic energy. Photons carry energy proportional to their frequency and travel at the speed of light. Their interactions with atmospheric gases and aerosols drive many meteorological and chemical processes, including absorption and scattering.
