Free electron

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005754

An electron that is not bound to an atom or molecule and can move freely through a material or space. In the atmosphere, free electrons are generated by processes such as cosmic ray bombardment and ultraviolet radiation, particularly in the ionosphere. These electrons contribute to the electrical conductivity of the upper atmosphere and are involved in aurora formation.
