Electron beam

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005328

A directed flow of electrons moving through a medium or vacuum. In atmospheric science, natural electron beams originating from the magnetosphere are guided by the Earth's magnetic field lines into the polar regions, where they collide with atmospheric gases to produce the aurora borealis and aurora australis. The energy of the electrons determines the colors and altitude of the auroral display, with energies ranging from a few hundred to tens of thousands of electron volts.
