Auroral arc

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003705

A luminous band of light that stretches across the sky, appearing as a relatively stable and continuous feature of the aurora. These arcs are formed by the precipitation of energetic electrons into the Earth's upper atmosphere, exciting atmospheric gases. They are oriented roughly east-west and are a common form of the aurora borealis and aurora australis.
