Auroral oval
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000231
A continuous, ring-shaped region centered around the Earth's magnetic poles where auroral activity is most frequently observed. This oval expands and contracts in size and intensity depending on the level of geomagnetic activity, driven by the solar wind. It is the primary zone where charged particles from the magnetosphere precipitate into the upper atmosphere, causing the aurora.
In solar-terrestrial terms, an oval band around each geomagnetic pole which is the locus
of structured aurorae
