An index that measures the global activity of the auroral electrojets, which are intense electric currents flowing in the ionosphere. The Auroral Electrojet (AE) index is derived from the horizontal component of the geomagnetic field recorded by a network of observatories in the northern auroral zone. This index is a key proxy for the energy input from the solar wind into the magnetosphere and ionosphere, with high values indicating a magnetospheric substorm is in progress.
