Auroral rays

Columnar structures of light that extend vertically along magnetic field lines within an auroral display. These rays are caused by energetic particles exciting atmospheric gases as they spiral down into the polar regions. They can appear as discrete, parallel beams or as part of a more complex auroral curtain.
