Electron precipitation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005331

The downward flux of energetic electrons from the magnetosphere into the Earth's upper atmosphere, primarily in the polar regions. These electrons collide with atmospheric gases, exciting them and causing the emission of light, which is observed as aurora. This process is driven by interactions between the solar wind and the Earth's magnetic field.
