Electron capture detection
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005329
An analytical technique used in gas chromatography to identify and quantify trace atmospheric gases that have a high affinity for capturing free electrons. A radioactive source, typically Nickel-63, ionizes a carrier gas to create a steady current of electrons, which is reduced when electronegative compounds pass through the detector. This method is exceptionally sensitive for measuring halogenated compounds like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride at parts-per-trillion concentrations.
