Flame ionization detection

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005610

A common analytical technique used in gas chromatography to detect organic compounds. It operates by burning the effluent from a gas chromatograph in a hydrogen-air flame, which ionizes carbon-containing molecules. The resulting ions are then collected, producing an electrical current proportional to the concentration of the organic compound, making it highly sensitive to hydrocarbons.
