Flame collector
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010506
An early instrument for measuring the atmosphere's electric potential gradient. It operates by using a small flame at the tip of an insulated, elevated conductor connected to an electrometer; the flame ionizes the surrounding air, allowing the conductor to acquire the same electrical potential as the air at that height. Due to fire hazards and operational difficulties, flame collectors have been largely superseded by radioactive collectors and field mills for atmospheric electricity measurements.
