Collector
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004513
An exposed sensor of an atmospheric electricity instrument that takes on the electrical potential of the surrounding air, so a connected electrometer can record the potential gradient. Designs include Kelvin's water dropper, whose spray of fine droplets equalizes an insulated pipe with its surroundings, and radioactive collectors such as the Benndorf radium type. Eskdalemuir's potential gradient record began with a water dropper collector in July 1910.
