Sulfur hexafluoride

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009376

A synthetic, colorless, odorless, non-flammable gas with the chemical formula SF6, known for its extremely high global warming potential. It is primarily used as an electrical insulator in high-voltage equipment and as a tracer gas in atmospheric studies due to its inertness. Despite its low atmospheric concentration, its long atmospheric lifetime of over 3,000 years makes it a potent greenhouse gas.
