Acetonitrile

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003226

An organic compound with the chemical formula CH3CN, present in the atmosphere primarily as a tracer for biomass burning. It is released during the combustion of organic matter and has a relatively long atmospheric lifetime, allowing for its transport over large regions. Acetonitrile concentrations are often used to estimate the impact of wildfires on air quality.
