Butadiene
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010414
A highly reactive volatile organic compound (VOC) present in the atmosphere primarily as a result of industrial emissions and motor vehicle exhaust. As a diene, it reacts rapidly with hydroxyl radicals (OH) and ozone, contributing to the formation of secondary organic aerosols and photochemical smog. Its atmospheric lifetime is very short, typically on the order of a few hours, limiting its transport to regions far from its emission sources.
