Aurora polaris
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003704
A natural light display in the Earth's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions, caused by the collision of energetic charged particles from the solar wind with atoms and molecules in the upper atmosphere. These collisions excite atmospheric gases, which then emit light as they return to their ground state. The aurora borealis occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, and the aurora australis in the Southern Hemisphere.
