Sunlit aurora
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009386
An aurora that occurs in the portion of the Earth's atmosphere that is illuminated by the sun, even though the observer is in darkness. This phenomenon is caused by the scattering of sunlight by excited atmospheric particles at very high altitudes. Sunlit auroras often appear red or pink due to the excitation of atomic oxygen at altitudes above 200 km.
