Beam

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003867

A directed emission of electromagnetic radiation, such as from a radar or lidar system, used to probe the atmosphere. The characteristics of the beam, including its width and power, determine the resolution and range of the instrument. In meteorology, radar beams are used to detect precipitation and measure wind velocities.
