Pulse

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-002179

  1. A brief, transient emission of electromagnetic energy, such as that produced by a radar transmitter. It is characterized by a rapid rise and fall in amplitude, defining a specific duration and repetition rate. The properties of these emitted pulses are analyzed after reflection to determine characteristics of atmospheric targets.

  2. A short burst of electromagnetic energy that a radar sends out in a straight line to detect a precipitation target. The straight line that this pulse travels along is called a radar beam.
