Vertical-beam radar
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010005
A type of radar that directs its electromagnetic beam straight up into the atmosphere to observe overhead conditions. Also known as a vertically pointing radar or wind profiler, it measures the Doppler shift of backscattered signals from precipitation or clear-air turbulence to determine vertical wind speeds and precipitation characteristics. These instruments provide a continuous time-height profile of the atmosphere directly above the radar site.
