Doppler radar

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000745

  1. A type of radar that uses the Doppler effect to measure the velocity of targets, such as precipitation, relative to the radar site. It transmits microwave pulses and analyzes the frequency shift of the reflected signals to determine motion towards or away from the radar. This technology provides information on wind shear, turbulence, and the internal dynamics of storms, with a typical range of 150 to 250 kilometers for velocity measurements.

  2. Radar that can measure radial velocity, the instantaneous component of motion parallel to
the radar beam (i.e., toward or away from the radar antenna).
