Doppler frequency shift
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005096
The alteration in the frequency of an electromagnetic or acoustic wave as it reflects off a moving target, relative to the frequency of the emitted wave. This shift is directly proportional to the radial velocity of the target, indicating whether it is moving towards or away from the sensor. It forms the basis for measuring wind speeds and precipitation motion in Doppler radar and lidar systems.
