Doppler effect
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005095
The apparent change in the frequency of a wave caused by relative motion between the wave source and the observer. As the source and observer move closer, the perceived frequency increases, and as they move apart, the frequency decreases. Doppler weather radar uses this principle by measuring the frequency shift of reflected microwaves to determine the velocity of precipitation particles toward or away from the radar.
